McLuhan. That is Parker Tyler. Parker Tyler, who
was gay, was to me the greatest theorist of film
that this country has ever seen. Now, it’s very
interesting that he is not mentioned. Someone who
was very close to him in sensibility, who has
written less copious works, Pauline Kael, again
someone who writes about the sensory
appreciation of literature. So I think that what we
need now in the 1990s is a return to all kinds of
